About Lakshman Balaji
After graduating from high school in India, Lakshman trained as a dentist in the largest dental hospital in his home state. Working in the only government funded hospital in the state, and encountering patients from all walks of life, with varied medical and dental conditions got him interested in public health as a field. He obtained his Master of Public Health in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from Cornell University—acquiring skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, and data analytics through a combination of coursework, internships with the Smithsonian Institute and the National Park service, and personal projects. Lakshman loves using R for data analytics. He is familiar with SAS and STATA, and looks forward to using these tools more often during his time with the Center for Resuscitation Science. He plans to gain valuable experience by plunging himself into the intense work-research environment at BIDMC and continue advancing his career in the field of biostatistics. In his free time, he enjoys illustrating cartoons, playing piano and the Irish tin whistle, and working out.
